Welcome to the Saorsa Media website, your online resource for the history, culture and literature of the Scottish Highlanders in Scotland and America.
The native language of the Scottish Highlands is Scottish Gaelic. This was the only language spoken by the vast majority of Highland communities that came to America, and many Scots continued to express themselves in Gaelic until recent times. Saorsa Media aims to make their unique literature and culture available to people today.
"Ossian's Grave" (Clach Oisein), An Caol-Ghleann, Scotland
America has welcomed immigrants from the Scottish Highlands from the 1600s to the present day, people who brought with them a rich oral literature and history. Although their story has often been confused and obscured, it is possible to learn about their experiences in their own words.
Saorsa Media is owned and operated by Michael Newton (PhD in Celtic Studies from the University of Edinburgh, 1998), a pioneer of Highland history and culture. Go to About for details.
